How to Choose a Wedding Photographer?

October 19, 2021

Have you ever asked yourself how to choose a wedding photographer?

So your partner has finally proposed, and now you are officially engaged. Congratulations!!

Now you can start hunting down all your favourite vendors and plan your wedding day.

In my opinion, one of the most important vendors is a wedding photographer. But how do you choose one? There are so many photographers around, and they all look the same!

Here are some easy tips and tricks to narrow down your research. Let’s dive in!

Budget

First things first, figure out what’s your budget.

There’s no point in getting in touch with a bunch of photographers if you simply can’t afford their services. You will only waste time and precious energy.

Please don’t forget, this is one of the most important days of your life. It won’t happen again and there is no chance to “let’s get married again because these pics are awful”.

I’ve spoken with so many couples that decided to go cheap on their wedding photographer, and they all regretted doing so. They have beautiful memories of their wedding in their mind, but the pictures are simply not good enough.

If there’s one thing you don’t want to save money on, that is your wedding photographer.

Style

Candid pictures or posed pictures? Natural light or flash?

Black and white or colour? Intimate or loud? There are tons of different styles in wedding photography, and you got to figure out what’s your personal preference.

Jump on Instagram, Facebook or Google and have a look at the photographers in your area.

Ask yourself: “what’s their style, and do I like it or not?”

Once you find a style that attracts you, you still have a few things to consider.

Quality of service

Ok so now you know how to choose a wedding photographer, and you think you might have found the right one.

Before you get in touch with them, have a look at how they present themselves. Does their website look professional?

Do they give you some info about themselves? How quickly do they reply to your emails or phone calls?

Do they send you a price guide, or do they simply write a quote into an email and send it to you?

Are they trying to help you and solve your problems, or are they barely treating you like any other couple?

I believe wedding photography nowadays is all about selling an amazing and unforgettable experience.

Because this is your day, and you deserve it.

If I go to an expensive restaurant, I am expecting to receive awesome service. Instead, if I go to a fast-food restaurant, I know the service will probably be poor, or at least not remarkable.

So keep in mind all these little details and if the photographer fails to impress you or is not up to your standards, just keep looking.

Personality

Personality is possibly the most important factor to keep in mind.

I believe the personality of the photographer and the couple has to match, or at least be very similar. If you are a very quiet and introverted person, you surely don’t want a loud and energetic photographer. And vice versa!

Remember, the secret to getting amazing pictures is for you to be comfortable in front of the camera.

If you are not comfortable, it will show up in your images! So find a photographer you can connect to on a personal level, and you know you’ll be nice and relaxed on your wedding day.

Trust your guts

Trust your feelings!

If you are absolutely in love with a wedding photographer, just book it. And to it quickly!

A wedding photographer can usually shoot up to 50 weddings each season (but many decide to shoot only 20!), and they are booked 1 to 2 years in advance.

If you find someone you really like, don’t run the risk to miss out. Just pay the deposit, and now you know you can cross the photographer off your list.

But if there’s something about the photographer you are not entirely sure about, I personally wouldn’t go ahead. Again, this is a very important decision for a hugely important day.

And you really want to be 100% sure about your choice.

Once you book the photographer, there’s no coming back! And you surely don’t want to spend days leading to your wedding wondering if that is the right person for you, don’t you?

These are the most important tips that will help you how to choose your wedding photographer.

I hope you’ll find them helpful! If you have any questions or you need any more info, just get in touch leaving a comment below or via email, and I’ll be happy to help you!
